Things To Do In Lakes Entrance| Best Attractions & Activities

ARVSCLakescentralcaravanparks_55.jpg

This picturesque holiday town is part beach, part lake and 100% stunning. Lakes Entrance is located on the spectacular Gippsland Lakes — one of the most extensive and most scenic waterways in Australia, covering over 350 square kilometres. Separated from the lakes by coastal dunes is Ninety Mile Beach, a stunning stretch of coastline that's ideal for swimming, surfing, kayaking, fishing … the list goes on!

But this waterside playground is more than just a scenic destination for travellers. It is filled with RV-friendly holiday parks with modern amenities like laundries, BBQ areas, camp kitchens, and pet-friendly options. Whether you're a couple, a family, or a solo adventurer, your long weekend, school holiday getaway, or road trip from Melbourne will be so worth the 4.5 hour trip! Lakes Entrance provides a comfy, well-connected base for exploring the best of Gippsland, with all the freedom and flexibility you'd expect from van life journeys.

Things To Do In Lakes Entrance Victoria: Outdoor Action

Discover outdoor adventures in Lakes Entrance — from kayaking and beach walks to mountain biking and wildlife cruises. This coastal gem is packed with outdoor activities for all ages and energy levels.

Hit The Beach

ARVSCLakesentrance2-20.jpg

A short stroll across the footbridge over Cunninghame Arm is Lakes Entrance Main Beach. This marks the eastern end of Ninety Mile Beach, a pristine, uninterrupted stretch of golden sand perfect for swimming, surfing, strolling, and beach fishing. It's a surf beach – so expect waves — but it's great for swimming. It's also patrolled across the summer, directly opposite the footbridge. A little further to the east is Eastern Beach, which is also patrolled over summer. If you prefer something a little quieter, try Lake Tyers Beach, which is a ten-minute drive further east.

Cruise The Lakes

Gippsland Lakes form Australia's largest inland network of waterways, so a boat cruise is a must-do. Regardless of the type of cruise you choose, you'll no doubt enjoy glimpses of some spectacular wildlife, including seals, dolphins, kangaroos, and native birds. Peel's Cruises is a family-owned gem that's been operating since 1920, and offers an unforgettable exploration of this picturesque paradise (along with a delicious lunch to keep the energy levels up as you build your Insta photo collection).

Fish With Fervour

Lakes Entrance is a dream destination for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you prefer casting from the shore or heading out on a boat, you'll find bream, whiting, and luderick among the most common catches. Fishing charter operators also offer both offshore and lake fishing adventures, providing all the gear you need. Seasonal prawns are also in abundance during summer, with fresh catches often available straight from the trawlers docked along the waterfront.

Walk With Nature

Meandering the Entrance Walk in Lakes Entrance will gift you the perfect blend of exercise and natural beauty. Whether you're a seasoned bushwalker or a quiet stroller, this 6km circuit walk will leave you feeling blissfully energised. Cross the Cunningham Arm Footbridge and immerse yourself in a picturesque world of sandy tracks and lush coastal flora. When you reach Flagstaff Jetty, you have choices. Follow the sandy track to Lady Harriet's Barge and the Rockwall boardwalk, or ascend to Flagstaff Lookout and continue to the Ocean Entrance rockwall boardwalk. Either way, be prepared for encounters with playful fur seals and the stunning vistas of the Ocean Entrance.

On your return journey, let the rhythmic sounds of crashing waves beckon you towards the pristine Ninety Mile Beach (again). This endless open coastline is ideal for long strolls while the kids collect shells, and you soak up the serenity.

Lakes Entrance Attractions: Natural Wonders

Bullock Island

Bullock Island had a facelift in 2024, and there are now grassy spaces perfect for a picnic and a jetty to fish from. It's also the home of locally sourced seafood, where you can experience 'Sea to Table' dining at Off the Wharf restaurant. Watch seafood being unloaded next door, send it to the kitchen, and the chefs will serve it to you as fresh as possible.

Jemmy's Point Lookout

Take a scenic stroll along Lookout Road in Kalimna and discover the breathtaking views at Jemmy's Point Lookout. Marvel at the panoramic vistas of The Entrance, Gippsland Lakes, Bass Strait, and 90 Mile Beach from the circular viewing platform. Then cross over to the Lakes Entrance Lookout before descending the hill back to the North Arm bridge.

Nyerimilang Heritage Park

Spanning 180 hectares, Nyerimilang Heritage Park offers a scenic blend of history and nature with magnificent views of the Gippsland Lakes. Here you'll discover a historic homestead surrounded by beautiful gardens, picnic areas, an array of wildlife, and bush walking tracks.

Raymond Island

Just a short ferry ride from Paynesville is Raymond Island. Raymond Island is a haven for wildlife, primarily well known for its large koala population. The best koala spotting is on the Koala Trail, a short walk that starts near the ferry arrival point and leads you among the gum trees. Look up, and you'll likely spot a sleeping koala. There's plenty of other wildlife to be seen on the island too, including the rare Burrunan dolphin, a bottlenose dolphin only found in the Gippsland Lakes and Port Phillip. The best spotting times in and around Raymond Island and Lakes Entrance are May and September.
