When it comes to buying an RV, it can be difficult to wrap your head around what all the different options are and what exactly each one has to offer. No need to worry though because, at Apollo, we’re pros in all things RV related and we’re here to give you a breakdown of motorhomes, caravans, campervans and 4WD campers. Each of these RVs are fantastic in their own right and what’s great about having so many options available is that there’s an RV out there for everyone no matter what your budget, travelling style or circumstances are. Whether you’re a solo traveller on a budget or a family who are eager to explore together, we have some invaluable insights to share:

Campervans

Solo travellers Campervans are pretty much exactly what they sound like: a van that you can sleep or “camp” in. Ideal for those who like to hit the road on a whim and don’t mind packing light, campervans offer a lot of freedom. If you’re on a pretty strict budget there’s no need to worry because sometimes a bit of “roughing it” makes your adventures all the more exciting and there are affordable options out there which will mostly consist of 2 berth Hitop Campers. These are great options that provide you with everything you need like a bed (that one’s probably obvious), a kitchenette or cooking area, a sink and a seating area that converts into your bed in the evenings. However, if you’re willing to spend that bit extra, you can also get a newer campervan with a shower and a toilet, and some even come with more amenities or kitchen appliances like these models. Here are the kind of travellers we recommend a campervan for:

  • Couples or a travelling duo
  • Those who aren’t looking for too much space or luxury
  • Those who want to travel on a budget

4WD Campers

A 4WD Camper is pretty similar to a campervan with one amazing advantage… you can take it off road! If you’re the kind of person who’s always keen for an adventure that takes you off the beaten track and doesn’t mind a weak (or non-existent) internet connection, this is the perfect option for you. Off road campervans mean that you can travel in the more remote parts of Australia and have access to those national parks and camping areas that can’t be reached by conventional vehicle. Opting for a 4WD camper will often mean that you’re working with pretty limited space but those who choose a 4WD campervan are usually the kind of people who prefer to spend their time in nature or exploring the great outdoors anyway. Here are the kind of travellers we recommend a 4WD camper for:

  • Anyone who enjoys heading off the grid
  • Those who enjoy off roading or are keen to get into it
  • Adventurous couples or travel buddies
  • Solo travellers (make sure you always have a satellite phone with you)

Caravans

The main difference between a caravan and the other RVs on this list is that a caravan has to be towed. Caravans are perfect for families and couples who like to explore during the weekends and holidays or even those who are planning to hit the road fulltime. As a general rule, caravans will cost less than a motorhome but you just have to make sure you have a suitable vehicle for towing it. Most decent caravans will have a full-sized bed, a kitchen & seating area and a toilet & shower. When it comes to caravans there are so many options out there to choose from which means you can find the perfect home on wheels depending on how many travellers will be using the caravan and what kind of space and amenities you’d like. We recommend caravans for:

  • Families with young kids
  • Couples
  • Those who are looking for a fully self-contained RV
  • Those who are looking for an option that’s more spacious than a campervan
  • Those who want the option of unhitching their car from their ‘campsite’

Motorhomes

Last, but definitely not least, there are motorhomes. The motorhome is often considered to be one of the most superior RVs on the market and it’s easy to understand why. Motorhomes are entirely self-sufficient and tend to offer a somewhat luxurious life on the road with some options even being comparable to an apartment on wheels. An excellent choice for those who have decided to commit to a life on the road, motorhomes are spacious and offer a lounge, kitchen, bedroom area, air conditioning, laundry facilities and a toilet & shower. There’s no need for towing with a motorhome which means your home on wheels comes with you everywhere you go. Motorhomes are perfect for:

  • Those who want to enjoy home comforts while on the road
  • Travellers who like to have a bit of space
  • Retirees who are eager to explore Australia or New Zealand
  • Families who are living on the road
  • Those who don’t want to tow
